I Took Gwyneth Paltrow's Healthy Living Advice for a Week

I came, I saw, I gooped. A few weeks ago, I asked my little sister if she had ever heard of vagina steaming. She isn't the most pop-culture-savvy 19-year-old, but even for her, "vagina steaming" is synonymous with the name Gwyneth. Last year, Gwyneth Paltrow touted its alleged restorative benefits on her lifestyle website, goop, and was widely ridiculed for suggesting women should spend 50 bucks to blow hot steam on their lady parts. This wasn't the first (or last) time the actress and lifestyle guru's advice was subject to scrutiny. She's known for her hybrid vegan, gluten-free, macrobiotic diet, she indulges in many holistic healing and detoxifying treatments that fall into a scientific gray area, and she frequently recommends outrageously expensive products (think $185 bobby pins and $45 socks). But skepticism from science experts and fans hasn't stopped the star. Her 2013 cookbook, It's All Good ($20; amazon.com)Â was a New York Times B...

Extend right leg forward as you lift hips off ground and raise right arm straight up. Swing right leg back, placing right foot and hand on ground, and then ...

Birth Control Pills May Help Prevent Some Cancers

A new study looks at how oral contraceptives affect cancer risk. ALICE PARK January 19, 2018 In the U.S., nearly all sexually active women have used a form of birth control at some point in their lives, and 11 million women rely on the pill. In a new study published in JAMA Oncology, researchers explore how oral contraceptives, which affect women’s hormone levels to prevent pregnancy, affect cancer risk. They found that women taking the pill lowered their risks of ovarian and endometrial cancer—a known benefit of the pill. The researchers also analyzed other factors that might affect the risk, including obesity, smoking status and physical activity levels. In addition to finding that the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers were lower among women who used the pill, the study found that the longer women were on oral contraceptives, the lower their risk was. For those taking the pill for 10 years or more, the risk of ovarian cancer was 40% lower compared to women who had neve...

You Can Now Get Birth Control From an App, Without Seeing a Doctor. Here’s What to Know Before You Try It

Is it safe to order birth control online? AMANDA MACMILLAN March 27, 2018 In this day and age, you can order pretty much anything online and get it delivered to your door—including protection against unplanned pregnancies. A number of companies have sprung up in the last few years that allow women in certain states to request birth control pills and other contraceptive methods via the Internet, sometimes without even seeing a doctor. These suppliers—with catchy names like Maven, Nurx, Lemonaid, and Pandia Health—offer convenience and confidentiality to women who may be too busy to squeeze in a visit to their gynecologist or nervous about picking up their prescription at a local pharmacy. And according to a recent NPR article, they’re gaining popularity in rural parts of the country sometimes called “contraception deserts” that lack easy access to women’s health services. But is getting a birth control prescription online really safe? And is it a good option for everyone? Heal...

How Many Times Can You Actually Take Plan B? Asking For a Friend

Is taking Plan B a couple or even countless times bad for your long-term health? Here's what the experts say. SUSAN BRICKELL April 19, 2018 When your regular form of birth control fails—whether it’s a broken condom or missed oral contraceptive—taking the morning-after pill as soon as possible can help prevent an unplanned pregnancy. While it's perfectly safe to take the morning-after pill, should you be concerned if you've taken it more than once, or even countless times? And could it affect your ability to get pregnant in the future? We asked experts to weigh in. The most common morning-after pills are over-the-counter tablets containing higher doses of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin hormone that is also in oral contraceptives. These pills work by preventing the ovary from releasing an egg, which in turn means you don't ovulate, lowering the risk of male sperm fertilizing an egg. You might know them by their brand names, such as Next Choice One Dose, Take...

This Is What Hilary Duff Meal Preps to Eat Healthy All Week

The actress opens up about her eating and exercise habits. REBECCA SHINNERS May 04, 2018 It's no secret that Hilary Duff has a healthy and happy outlook on life—we've found ourselves applauding the Younger actress for pointing out her so-called "flaws" in bathing suit selfies and envying her unique workout style. And now, Duff is letting us in on another mantra of hers—the importance of spending time outside. She recently teamed up with Claritin for their "20 Minutes of Spring" initiative to encourage people to get outdoors. Sitting together on a New York city rooftop, I can't help but tell Duff how jealous I am that she's from sunny Los Angeles, where it's easy to spend time outside year-round. But she offers a tip from her days working in New York: "I started knitting like 10 years ago, but whenever I would get off work early and it was a nice day, I would just make myself go knit in the park and it was so lovely," she says...
